SINGLE
COLOUR LED DISPLAYS
The most basic Alphanumeric
LED Displays are of the single colour type. Single colour displays
can only display text in ONE colour. The colour of the display is
determined by the type and colour of the LED (light emitting diode)
used in the display.
The standard colour of a
PolyComp in single colour displays is RED. Other colours available
include GREEN, YELLOW and AMBER. The standard RED LED's used by
PolyComp come in various brightness' namely: 40mcd (milli candela),
100mcd, 1000mcd (outdoor use), 600mcd amber elliptical.
OPERATION
/ FEATURES
PolyComp Alphanumeric LED
Displays are easily programmable, with various methods of operation
to suit almost any application.
Keyboard Operation
The
simplest way to program Alphanumeric LED Displays, is using the
standard PolyComp RMSP-100 Infra-Red Keyboard. The keyboard is simply
pointed at the display and the message is typed into the display.
PC Operation
PolyComp Alphanumeric LED Displays can also be programmed from remote
locations using PC's and Windows Compatible Software.
The LED displays can be
connected to PC's in various ways:
- Connected directly to
a PC's Serial Communication Port
- Via dial-up modem
- Over Ethernet TCP/IP
network
Messages are then edited
and composed on PC and then downloaded or sent to the display.

PC Operation is particularly
effective when using multiple LED displays. Each display can be
given its own identity and messages specific to it can be downloaded
from the PC software, without affecting the other LED displays in
the system.
NOTE: For custom applications,
or when the LED displays are used as part of another system, PolyComp
will supply the Serial Communication Protocol Technical Specifications,
for 3rd party development.

Upto 64 signs can be connected on a single pair
wires addressed individually or "All Call".

COMMUNICATION
OPTIONS
- RS232 - Connected directly
to the serial communication port of a PC. The cabling is limited
to a maximum of 50 meters between the PC and the display.
- RS232 is suitable for
single display applications with short cable lengths.
- RS485 - Connected to
the serial communication port of a PC via a RS232 to RS485 converter.
Suitable for use in connecting many signs together on the same
cable with no conflicts, in electrically noisy environments.
- Ethernet - Connected
directly into a TCP/IP 10BaseT Ethernet network, and assigned
its own IP address. Suitable for use where there is an existing
network infrastructure.
- Modem - Connected directly
to a modem that answers an incoming call from the PC operator,
and will disconnect after the message has been transmitted. Suitable
for use where there is an existing telephone line and other communication
options are unsuitable.
ALPHANUMERIC
LED DISPLAYS
Description
Alphanumeric LED Displays are electronic (Light Emitting Diode)
displays used to display visual messages made up of letters, numbers
and special characters.
The main parameters describing
Alphanumeric LED Displays are:
- Number of Characters
Per Line - This is the number of standard sized characters that
each line of an electronic display is capable of displaying.
- PolyComp's standard character
per line models include:
- 16 characters ; 24 characyers;
32 characters & 40 characters.
- Forspecial applications,
a specific number of lines per board may be requested.
Number of Lines -
This is the maximum number of lines the electronic display is ableto
display at any one time, using standard sized characters. olyComp's
standard number oflines include: 1 line, 2 lines, 4 lines, 6 lines
& 8 lines.
For special applications, aspecificnumberof lines per board maybe
requested.
NOTE: Difference between
a V1 and V2 board
A V1 board can only display standard height characters on each
individual line of a display. A V2 board has theflexibility to
join two lines of a display to create a bold type character that
is almost double the height of the standard sized character.
This means that a sign
that can display 4 lines with 24 characters per line and a character
height of 6mm, can also display 2 lines of 12 characters with
a height of 120mm.
Note - When the bold type character isused on aV2 board, the character
height almost doubles, whereas the number of characters per line
is halved due to the bigger width of the bold type character.
Character Height
- This is a physical measure of the height of a standard sized character
expressed in inches or millimeters.
PolyComp's standard character heights are:
Character height in inches* Character height in millimeters* Max
viewing distance of standard sized characters
- 1 30 8-10m
- 2 60 25-30m
- 4 100 40-45m
- 6 150 60-70m
- 8 200 95-110m
*
an indication, sizes have been rounded to nearest whole digit, actual
sizes may vary slightly.
